However, the Antique Car Club “Klasika” always strives to bring innovations to the city life. Those who visited Biržai Castle on the 14th of July were not disappointed. They had a chance to take pictures standing by several antique cars and talk to the members of “Klasika” Club about antique cars and museum artifacts. Newlyweds were honored in particular. They were really pleasantly surprised by the souvenirs, flowers, and attention they received from the “Klasika” Club. In most countries of Western Europe and many states of the US small weekend car shows are very popular and welcomed by museums and community organizations. Even though antique car shows are not new in Biržai, in Lithuania there are still places where such events are a novelty. On July 15 (Sunday) Antique Car Club “Klasika” went to the town of Linkuva (Pakruojis District) where an antique car show and parade were held.Linkuva is one of the oldest and most interesting cities of Žiemgala. It is situated on the highest ridge of the Linkuva Hill, 18 kilometers north-east of Pakruojis. In 1661 the Blessed Virgin Mary Church was built in Linkuva, and a Carmelite Monastery was built in the 16th – 18th centuries. Linkuva is a small but very cozy and neat town, and it hosts festivals, that are far larger in scope than those held in Biržai.

Every year on July 15, the Feast of Blessed Mary is held, known locally as Škaplierna. The town is visited by many guests, who enjoy live entertainment and sports events. The celebration usually lasts for three days, starting Friday and ending Sunday evening. This year, for the first time in its history, the town had an antique car show, which was organized by the “Klasika” Club. According to the elder of the town, Kazimiera Bacevičienė, the antique car show exceeded all expectations. The show attracted large crowds to the small town square. There was hardly enough space for a theatre act “Catching a Pickpocketer” that was put up by the Club members. Linkuva residents were surprised to learn that there was this pickpocket by the name of Fedia, who was raging across the Soviet Union, and who was quickly caught by policemen and security and shoved into a militia car.

As always during such events, members of the “Klasika” Club promoted Biržai distributing promotional material and invitations to the Biržai Town Festival. One other thing that left a pleasant impression on us was the cleanliness of the town. After the show was over and we left the town square, we did not see any promotional brochures, pamphlets or litter on the ground. After the show was over we could not stay in the town square for long as the local policemen escorted us out. Of course, they tried to help us leave in a good sense, because there were so many people that without the help of officers we would not have been able to leave the place. Having said good-bye to Linkuva with the honks of our cars, we drove off towards our native Birzai. Yet another celebration ended, having filled the yearbook of the “Klasika” Club with pleasant and memorable impressions.

We would like to offer you a few a few festive moments caught by the photo lens of Dainius Nagele.
